Special Interview with PASSPO☆ at KAWAii!! NiPPON EXPO 2014!

interviewed by Lisa

PASSPO☆ Profile

A cute group of 9 flight attendants! They are a girls’ rock unit featuring the “sky” and “traveling”, and were formed in 2009 with the concept “creating with everyone”.
Each live performance is a “flight”, where members take the role of “crews” with costumes of flight attendants and entertain their fans or “passengers”.
This creative concept, consistent full-scale rock sound from their indies, and familiarity from non-idol like talk and actions are what make them popular.
Their major debut single 「Shoujo-hikou」 sold from May 4th, 2011, ranked top in the Oricon weekly ranking after its first week of sales, which was a first ever achievement for an all-girls’ group.
They performed at the “JAPAN EXPO” held in Paris (July 2011) to an audience of 5000 and have captured hearts of fans outside Japan.

These Girls Rock! Five Idol Groups That Go to 11

$

It seems like in the past few months there have been countless reports of Babymetal taking over the world with their brand of “kawaii metal” but, they are not the only group mixing the cuteness of idols with the sounds of distorted guitars and thundering drums. Even though there may be a stereotypical image of conventional idol music being saccharine sweet and adorned with frills, it has not always abided by those guidelines. Whether it was the pop-punk sounds of Morning Musume Otome Gumi’s “Yuujou ~ Kokoro no Busu ni wa Naranee!~ “ (2004), Momoiro Clover Z’s epic “Mouretsu Uchuu Koukyouku Dai 7 Gakushou ‘Mugen no Ai’” (2012) featuring ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, or AKB48’s “Korogaru Ishi ni Nare” (2006), there has always been a place for idol fans to pump their fists and bang their heads. This list is not meant to be all inclusive, and because we are only presenting 5 groups at this time, there will be another installment to introduce more groups later. As criteria for selection was limited to groups that are: 1) currently active and 2) not bands, groups like BiS, SCANDAL, Gacharic Spin, ZONE, MARIA, et al. were excluded. The groups are listed below in alphabetical order.

Babyraids

This 4 member group from the same agency as 9nine (LesPros) seek to invade and takeover other idol events, regularly appearing in Shibuya or outside other idol concerts to promote themselves by passing out flyers and tissue packets. Babyraids made their debut in 2012 with the help of Idoling!!! member Ami Kikuchi and perform weekly at Toranomon Dojo which is located in Pony Canyon’s headquarters. Members of Japanese rock bands like Sex Machineguns, Dragon Ash, Hawaiian 6, SOPHIA, and Snail Ramp have contributed to shaping Babyraids’ fist-pumping sound. Their biggest hit “Koyomi no ue de wa December” was featured on the NHK morning drama “Ama-chan” and got Babyraids a 5th place ranking on the Oricon.

CAMOUFLAGE

This Nagoya-based group under Verus Entertainment was born from a selection of members working at several concept cafes (Moeri, Mai Leaf, A.i cafe, moe2sta, momochafe), but also includes members from outside as well. CAMOUFLAGE debuted with 9 members back in 2012 with 9 members, but currently have 7 members and are known to perform while wearing pink camouflage outfits and waving around toy guns. Fans of SKE48 might recognize former Team S member Moe Yamashita. CAMOUFLAGE is unusual in that they have a guitar player (Takasaki) and a DJ (Kamiya) which makes them sort of a hybrid between an idol group and a girls band.

Some Main Stage Highlights of the @JAM EXPO 2014

$

Many of the bigger acts of the @JAM EXPO split their time between the Strawberry, Blueberry, and Pineapple Stages on Sunday. With the Strawberry Stage being the largest and easiest to access, unless you were a die-hard fan of any of these groups, staying in the arena was the safest bet to see your favorites. Unlike the Hot Stage at Tokyo Idol Festival, it was indoors, but that only meant that it was slightly cooler with all the red-hot groups onstage! While it would have been great to see all the groups, starting with openers UPUPGIRLS KARI (10:00-10:30), with 100 groups all over the arena, it proved to be an impossible task.

Dempagumi.inc

img-jam-idol-highlights-08

As one of the few groups that had been a part of @JAM events from the very beginning, Dempagumi.inc was the obvious choice to bring festivities to a close. A manic video show on the screens accompanied the opening songs “Demparade Japan” and “VANDALISM” before they slowed things down with “Kira Kira Tune”. The arena glowed orange during the emotional “ORANGE RIUM” and the set was capped off with the rambunctious “Chururi Chururira”.

Special Collab

LinQ & Dorothy Little Happy

img-jam-idol-highlights-01

PASSPO☆ & SUPER GiRLS

One of the highlights of the day came during the “Collab Special” between Tokyo Performance Doll and SUPER☆GiRLS. Team Makenki performed “Mugen Fly High!!” followed by Hime Kyun Fruit Can, Dorothy Little Happy, and LinQ doing “nerve”. SUPER☆GiRLS and PASSPO☆ formed two units with the first one, “SUPER-PO☆” (Anzai, Mori, Makita, Negishi, and Fujimoto from PASSPO☆ plus Hikaru Watanabe, Asakawa, Shimura, Katsuta, Mizote, Arai, and Uchimura from SUPER☆GiRLS) got together for a rendition of “Joshiryoku Paradise” like never seen before with Mori belting out the final “KIMI wo Get Chu” loud enough that she could have been heard even without a microphone. The second group, “PASS-GiRL” (Miyazaki, Maeshima, Koume Watanabe, and Tanaka from SUPER☆GiRLS; with Tamai, Masui, Okunaka, and Iwamura from PASSPO☆) delivered an incredibly sweet version of “Hikou Shojo”.

PASSPO☆

img-jam-idol-highlights-07
img-jam-idol-highlights-06

Despite the playful jab from SUPER☆GiRLS about PASSPO☆ recently “flying at a low altitude” during the collab stage, the 9 member girls rock unit took flight with a 6 song set which began with the festive “Natsuzora Hanabi” and landed safely with their Oricon Weekly #1 ranked “Shojo Hikou”. Other songs included their latest single “Himawari”, “Material Girl”, “WANTED!!”, and “the song that everyone likes” according to Anna Tamai, “Pretty Lie”.

Hime Kyun Fruit Can

img-jam-idol-highlights-03
img-jam-idol-highlights-04

Hime Kyun Fruit Can rocked with a powerful nonstop set that had fans jumping and two-stepping as well as shoes and hats flying through the air. With a mix of their major label (“Andante”, “Moratorium”, “Seize the days!”, “Summer Story”) and indies (“Strawberry KISS” and “Killer Tune”) songs, the quintet from Ehime left the stage glistening with sweat.

While there were many amazing performances on the @JAM Strawberry Stage, as mentioned earlier, this author had attempted to see all 100 groups that were performing that day. As a result, there were quite a few groups that I had seen but cannot thoroughly report on in this short article, as I was unable to see their entire performance. Do not make the same mistake that I did. When presented with so many choices at an event like @JAM EXPO, make your plans well in advance and stick to them! Please be sure to comment the next time we announce an event and we will try harder to bring you detailed reports about the groups you want to hear more about!

img_Makochan_05

I, Makoto Okunaka, have decided that I will graduate from PASSPO☆ at the final performance of this tour.

img_Makochan_06

In these 5 years, there were many fun experiences but, also many sad and frustrating experiences as well.

img_Makochan_07

“Shoujo Hikou” got ranked #1 in the Oricon Weekly Ranking.
In addition to PASSPO☆’s activities, there was also Kamen Rider Wizard.

img_Makochan_08

Meeting with Ground Crew.
Then, saying forever good bye to Yoko-san (bass player for Ground Crew)…

img_Makochan_09

I could experience many different things because I was part of PASSPO☆

img_Makochan_10

While PASSPO☆’s activities were really fun, I worried about my own future.

img_Makochan_11

I would like to become more active as an actress in the future so…
My dream of becoming an actress has caused me to feel impatient.

img_Makochan_12

I have been a member of PASSPO☆ for 5 years.
and, I am now 20 years old.

img_Makochan_13

I came to think that I want to challenge myself in another stage.

img_Makochan_14

It’s my first time to make such a big decision on my own.
It’s not clear now … if its right or wrong but…

img_Makochan_15

But, because I made this decision, because I’m alive now, with all of my ability,
I want to make it a decision with no regrets!

img_Makochan_16

I will graduate from this group on January 1st, next year.

img_Makochan_17

There is a long, long road ahead of PASSPO☆ and for me as well.
I would like to keep going on that road, step by step.

Please continue to support PASSPO☆ from now on.

“TRACKS” includes all of the singles released since PASSPO☆’s major label debut as well as songs that are extremely popular during their “flights” (PASSPO☆‘s name for their events/performances). “Shojo Hikou” has been re-recorded with the current 9 members (it was originally released on May 4, 2011 shortly before Kaho Sakuma graduated in December of 2011). There is also a new song “TRACKS” which is the same name as the album and will be Makoto Okunaka’s final song with the group︎. “TRACKS” also refers to the tracks (“kiseki” in Japanese) left by PASSPO☆ in the 5 years since they were formed.

“TRACKS” will be released in 4 different versions: First Class Edition, Economy Class Edition, Low Cost Carrier Edition Peach, and Low Cost Carrier Edition Vanilla. The First Class Edition will come with a DVD containing special footage, while the Economy Class Edition will come with a CD containing a nonstop remix of PASSPO☆’s songs. Akasaka Halloween: A Goodie Bag Overflowing With Idol Treats!

Halloween hasn’t always been a big deal in Japan but it seems to be gathering momentum lately.

The second day of Akasaka Halloween on November 1st was further proof of that trend. With 11 groups and soloist You Kikkawa on the schedule (as well as a bunch of Japanese comedians) it was the idol music equivalent of a bag overflowing with candy from a successful night of trick-or-treating!

Festivities kicked off with amorecarina, the little sister group of Chu-Z, who gave an enthusiastic super-cute performance before rushing off to Idol Koshien Festival in Odaiba.

0H9A6958 0H9A6959 0H9A6964 0H9A6966 0H9A6969

hy4_4yh (pronounced “Hyper Yo-Yo”) came out with a DJ dressed in an astronaut outfit and proceeded to rock the crowd with their energetic brand of fast-paced hip-hop tunes.

0H9A7015 0H9A7032 0H9A7037 0H9A7039 0H9A7040

You Kikkawa, dressed as a sexy sadistic police officer, beat the audience into submission and had them begging for more as she strutted around the stage brandishing a whip and a toy pistol. We only wish it could be Halloween everyday if this is the result.

0H9A7228 0H9A7229 0H9A7399 0H9A7416 0H9A7421

Chu-Z took the stage in new white outfits accented with their colors that looked to be inspired by the cover of their latest single “Bombastic!”. A considerable number of Chu Pets (name for Chu-Z fans) were out in full force, brandishing their Bomber Sticks as they shook along to the powerful performance on stage.

0H9A7608 0H9A7648 0H9A7460 0H9A7478 0H9A7689

nanoCUNE were either dressed as panda witches or skull witches but, one thing was certain, they blasted the crowd with a nonstop set featuring songs like “Tempra”, “Massatsu Rock”, and “Usotsuki Lion”. A particularly impressive feat considering that only hours before they were in Odaiba kicking off Idol Koshien Festival alongside Hime Kyun Fruit Can only a few hours earlier.

0H9A7983 0H9A7965 0H9A7992 0H9A7931 0H9A7878

Hime Kyun Fruit Can traded in their customary tank tops for maid outfits but whipped the crowd into a jumping, fist-pumping frenzy as they always do. If you hired Hime Kyun Fruit Can as maids, your room would be in shambles but you would not be disappointed because your world would have been rocked anyway.

0H9A8282 0H9A8221 0H9A8219 0H9A8175 0H9A8172

palet didn’t dress up but, made up for it with a solid performance. Their upcoming single “SNOW DISTANCE” was chill inducing, despite the heat rising from the hot-blooded crowd inside Akasaka Blitz.

0H9A8352 0H9A8301 0H9A8464 0H9A8596 0H9A8490

PASSPO☆ was without Makoto Okunaka, as she was starring in a play based on the game Dangan Ronpa on the other side of town but they still took all the passengers (PASSPO☆ term for their fans) on a flight worth remembering. Wearing matching Waldo (Wally in Japan) costumes designed by Yukimi Fujimoto for a mere 2000 yen each, the 8-member crew even managed to incite a small mosh pit during their final song “Himawari”.

0H9A8972 0H9A8936 0H9A8875 0H9A8845 0H9A8753

Even though it had already become November, SUPER☆GiRLS made everyone feel as if summer had never ended with red-hot renditions of “Ahhahha! ~Chouzetsu Bakushou Ondo~” and “MAX! Otome”.

0H9A9358 0H9A9311 0H9A9177 0H9A9173 0H9A9544

Cheeky Parade became “Cheeky Zombies” but their set was anything but slow and lumbering. Starting with their epic upcoming single “CANDY POP GALAXY BOMB”, Cheeky Parade gave a performance that would have raised the dead. Our only complaint about their zombie makeup was that it prevented us from seeing their cute faces! So cheeky of them!

0H9A9601 0H9A9599 0H9A9817 0H9A9805 0H9A9639

THE POSSIBOOOOO went all out for Akasaka Halloween. Robin (Robin Shoko Okada) was a bunny girl, Hashimon (Aina Hashimoto) and Akkyan (Yurika Akiyama) were a matching prisoner and police officer matching set, Gotoo (Yuki Goto) was a vampire and Mororin (Kanami Morozuka) was a devil. On top of their amazing costumes, they delivered a set hotter than 100 Jack-o-lanterns, starting with the fast-paced “Do Me! Do!” and not letting up until the end of the towel-waving “Eien Fireball” which only served to fan the flames in the hearts of the fans in the floor area.

0H9A0219 0H9A0064 0H9A0123 0H9A0217 0H9A0061

UPUPGIRLS (KARI) were the last group up and they came out fighting! Dressed in military-themed outfits, the “Number 1 Fighting Girls” roared across the stage in a blitzkrieg of powerful dancing and uptempo songs starting with the punkish “Ichiban Girls” and the foot-stomping “Survival Girls”. Ending Akasaka Halloween with an “Uppercut”, UPUPGIRLS (KARI) gave a knockout performance that you can watch on their official YouTube channel here.

@JAM EXPO Sports Festival: A One-Day Throwback to Japanese School Days

It took a while for us to go through all the hours of footage but, at long last, we can bring you highlights of the sports festival (undou-kai) from @JAM EXPO at Yokohama Arena on August 31, 2014!

You can watch the full video here!
http://tokyogirlsupdate.com/premium_contents/atjam-expo-sports-festival

One of the signs that summer is over in Japan is the school sports festival and the second Monday in October is a national holiday known as Health and Sports Day (taiiku no hi) in commemoration of the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In a typical Japanese sports festival there are events like tug-of-war (tsuna hiki) and a relay but also things like a “marshmallow-finding-contest” (mashumaro sagashi kyousou) which is like bobbing for apples but with marshmallows hidden in boxes of flour, and “ball toss” (tamaire). It is an experience that resonates in the hearts of those who grew up in Japan and reminds them of their younger days.

Idols have a history of participating in sports festivals, with one of the better-known examples being when Hello! Project would hold annual events from 2001 until 2006 in places like Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo Dome, and Osaka Dome. More recently, members of AKB48 and their sister groups had a sports festival competition on the variety show Mecha Mecha Iketeru in 2013. Because idols typically represent idealized images of youth, having them participate in a sports festival, another symbol of youth is a perfect match.

For the @JAM Expo sports festival, the competing idols were divided into “high school/graduates” and “elementary/middle school” divisions. Some of the groups who participated in the sports event include: PASSPO☆, Negicco, AeLL, CAMOUFLAGE, Moso Calibration, JK21, Tokyo Performance Doll, Dorothy Little Happy, ANNA☆S, GALETTe, You Kikkawa, amorecarina, Akamaru Dash☆, UPUPGIRLS(KARI), Otome Shinto, Prizmmy , Prism Mates, Yamaguchi Kassei Gakuen, Idol Rennaisance, nanoCUNE, and Tokyo Cheer② Party.

Both events started with an athlete’s oath (senshu sensei) delivered by Minami Sengoku from UPUP GIRLS(KARI) and Airi of Prism Mates, and radio exercises. It was an exciting opportunity to cheer on one’s favorite idols and see them in a situateion that they would not normally find themselves in. If you aren’t a “DD” (a person who likes a lot of different idols), why not make plans to come to next year’s @JAM EXPO and cheer on your favorite idols?

PASSPO☆ Say Thank You and Good Bye to Makoto Okunaka in the MV for “TRACKS”

PASSPO☆ has unveiled the MV for “TRACKS” the new song on their upcoming best album of the same name (release date: December 10) and it will surely leave fans of Makoto Okunaka with a heavy heart.

The video opens with Okunaka, who will graduate from the group on the tour finale for PASSPO☆ this coming New Year’s Day, walking towards a door with a suitcase in hand. She turns and gazes out from the screen simply saying, “I’ll be going” (Ittekimasu). From there, the music starts and scenes of Makoto running down a road are interspersed with the members at what looks like a farewell party. As they look at the different costumes they wore over their 5-year history and look wistfully towards the sky, the finality of Makocchan’s graduation begins to sink in.

Perhaps it is a good thing that this is only a shortened preview of the video as it is pretty heavy but it seems odd that it doesn’t seem to be included on the DVD. Hopefully, it will get added on and they will have the full version online for 24 hours like they did with the video for “Himawari”? The clock is ticking towards Makoto Okunaka’s final day as a member of PASSPO☆ so if you are a fan of hers, remember that it’s now or nothing!

Harajuku Model Misa Kimura Makes her Idol Debut During “Joshi Collective” Live Webcast From 2.5D Studio!

img_MUSUBIZM

Popular Harajuku Model Misa Kimura is now an idol! The group’s name is MUSUBIZM and their theme is “to bring the world together with the power of Japanese ‘kawaii’ culture. The 6-member group unveiled their first performance on December 19th during the live webcast of “Joshi Collective”.

“Joshi Collective”, a regular web program on the social TV site 2.5D, is sort of like a “girl’s night out” (joshikai) where models, idols, artists, musicians, and other women working in the entertainment and media industry of Japan gather together to discuss topics important to them. In addition to the usual cast of Misa Kimura, vocalist from the band SEBASTIAN X, Manatsu Nagahama, model Ren Koseki, comedy duo SPIKE (Shiho Matsuura and Haruna Ogawa), singer Shiho Namba, and idol Natsuki Kiyoshi (Kiyoshi Ryujin 25), popular idol units Pla2me and Hacchake-tai (from PASSPO☆; Shiori Mori, Naomi Anzai, Yukimi Fujimoto, and Natsumi Iwamura) were part of the exciting broadcast.

The first part of the program was a talk show where Pla2me and Hacchake-tai were asked to talk about things that worried them as well as how they stay positive despite the ups and downs of being an idol. Pla2me’s Saki Kamiya and Mari Mizuta worried that they wouldn’t be seen as vulnerable or sensitive (a trait that many Japanese women perceive as being popular or attractive) because of the wild and physical nature of their dance performances. The Hacchake-tai echoed the sentiment by worrying that they weren’t as popular as the more feminine members of PASSPO☆, particularly since they are known for being the rowdy “older sisters” of the group that like to drink. However, you kind of have to admire a group that claims to “never get down”, even if their motto is “if you get depressed, let’s have a drink!” (ochikondara, toriaezu kanpai!) Matsuura from Spike suggested that they learn to cry more often instead of always being so high-spirited but her partner Ogawa quickly shot her down by saying “this one has never had a boyfriend before!”

The second half of the program featured live performances from Pla2me and Hacchake-tai which got the 2.5D studio heated up but, when the main hosts returned to the stage “Misamisa” (popular nickname for Misa Kimura) was missing! A few moments later she appeared on stage with 5 other young girls and despite it being their first performance, the crowd of idol fans and Harajuku fashion types received them warmly. After finishing their first song “unlucky girl”, they went into their “self-intro song” (most groups have these and the members mention their special characteristics or catchphrases in them) “MUSUBIZM”. As expected of a group under ASOBISYSTEM (same agency as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and TEMPURA KIDZ), their Japanese-inspired outfits were bright and poppy and their songs were an energetic dempa-kei mishmash of genres. With the end of their short first performance, many of the members of MUSUBIZM were brought to tears after having completed the first major step in their career as idols.

LIVE00 LIVE001 LIVE002 LIVE003 LIVE004

All the members of MUSUBIZM (aside from Misamisa, who already had one) opened Twitter accounts on December 19th, had a live webcast on their UStream channel on December 23, and appeared at the MiSS iD Festival ’14 alongside groups like Niji no Conquistador, Houkago Princess, and “many more” at Shinjuku Re NY on December 27th to close out 2014. They open their activities for 2015 with an appearance at ifes Premium ~Shin-nen O-EAST 500yen Kouen Special~ on January 6th. Don’t miss out on Japan’s latest idol group!

Makoto Okunaka’s Final Departure: PASSPO☆’s Marathon New Year’s Day Concert!

Travel-themed girls rock unit PASSPO☆ celebrated their 5-year anniversary, welcomed in 2015 and bid farewell to member Makoto Okunaka in grand fashion at Tokyo Dome City Hall on New Year’s Day.

The sold-out audience of 3,500 “passengers” (PASSPO☆ term for fans) were taken on a “flight” (PASSPO☆ term for performances/events) that spanned 67 songs and more than 6 hours. The concert titled “PASSPO☆ Kessei 5 Shuunen Count UP Tour, Tour Final “Shinnen dayo! 5 Shuunen to Sukoshi Bin ~Zenkyoku Wasurezu Odoreru kana~” (English: 5th Anniversary Count UP Tour, Tour Final “It’s New Year’s!” 5 Years and a few days Flight ~ Can we do all of our Songs Without Forgetting Anything?)” was an unprecedented event and impressive display of the growth of PASSPO☆ as performers.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P006

The quartet of Shiori Mori, Yukimi Fujimoto, Naomi Anzai, and Natsumi Iwamura, also known as the Hacchake-tai opened up the show with a rousing rendition of “Hacchake Sensation” before the familiar sounds of “Full Throttle” filled the hall and PASSPO☆ took the stage as 9 members for the final time. Dressed in their red, blue, and white uniforms from “Perfect Sky” and grey New Balance sneakers, they began with their Oricon weekly #1 ranked “Shojo Hikou”. As it was New Year’s Day in Japan there were kadomatsu (traditional decorations) on both sides of the stage and they even broke open a barrel of sake with wooden mallets on stage, resulting in Natsumi Iwamura being splashed. Additionally, audience members received omikuji (fortunes available at Shinto shrines) that were written in the 9 different colors of the members of PASSPO☆.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P001

As they continued on through their major label singles, videos from the songs played on the screen behind them, offering glimpses into the history of PASSPO, especially when seeing the group’s first graduated member Kaho Sakuma (graduated in December of 2011) on the screen. During “With XXXX” there was even a shadowy dancer on the screen holding a green penlight (Sakuma’s color) but she did not make an appearance on this night.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P022 img_PASSPO_20150101_P009

Fan favorite “Pretty Lie” had passengers shouting out the call-and-response enthusiastically along with the first of many instances of the arena floor being engulfed in pink penlight kechas when Makoto Okunaka delivered her solo lines. Ai Negishi, Mio Masui, Anna Tamai, Sako Makita, and Okunaka may have been saddened by the fact that this was the last time for them to be performing “Shang Shang Chandelier” as they attempted a feeble victory cry but they powered through it, waving their fans elegantly and hopping around like jiangshi (Chinese hopping ghouls).

img_PASSPO_20150101_P024

Compared to other graduation concerts filled with tearful heartfelt speeches, Makoto Okunaka’s graduation was handled by the Hacchake-tai, which meant lots of cardboard box art and general silliness. The Ground Crew (PASSPO☆’s backing band) made their first appearance on stage as “teachers” and Naomi Anzai read a message from graduated member Kaho Sakuma before the Hacchake-tai joined by Okunaka launched into “Kibun wa Saikou! Saikou! Saikou!” to dispel the earlier gloomy mood completely. Okunaka tried her best to keep up with the wild dancing and bid farewell to her pink happi coat as it was lifted away on a wire. At the end she was asked how she felt, to which she responded “I don’t really get what’s going on!”, which might be a typical response when seeing the Hacchake-tai for the first time.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P003 img_PASSPO_20150101_P002 img_PASSPO_20150101_P004 img_PASSPO_20150101_P005

PASSPO☆ continued with a 20-song medley split into four parts, with the first part including “Muteki GIRL”, “Natsuzora Dash””Go On A High Way”, “Hareruyo” mixed together with “Halleluiah”, “Hello”, and “Hakana” before taking a quick water break.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P008 img_PASSPO_20150101_P007 img_PASSPO_20150101_P015 img_PASSPO_20150101_P017 img_PASSPO_20150101_P018 img_PASSPO_20150101_P019 img_PASSPO_20150101_P020 img_PASSPO_20150101_P034 img_PASSPO_20150101_P043

The medley transitioned into the slower softer songs “Truly” and “Sakura Iro” before gradually speeding up with “See You Again” and the harder rock guitar sounds of “Final Vision” and “Tap My Toe”, highlighted by Sako Makita and Anna Tamai’s cartwheels and Mio Masui and Makoto Okunaka’s ninja star throwing moves (no actual ninja stars were thrown) during the agressive funk rock of “Street Fighter”.

Shiori Mori sang out the end of “RUIN” while the other 8 members ran off stage. They returned having donned baseball jerseys to sing “No.1 Boy” as scenes from their variety show “Shaku Uma TV” played on the screen. The jerseys came off as they continued with the punk rock “Thank You Birthday”.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P010 img_PASSPO_20150101_P016 img_PASSPO_20150101_P029 img_PASSPO_20150101_P030 img_PASSPO_20150101_P031 img_PASSPO_20150101_P040

The medley came to an end with Ai Negishi, Anna Tamai, Natsumi Iwamura, and Sako Makita rocking out to “Starting Over” which transitioned into “Turn Around” with Naomi Anzai switching out with Tamai. Mio Masui carried Makoto Okunaka on her back as she ran on stage before they sang the retro-rock duet “Yume Passport”. All 9 members returned to the stage for the spicy “Kimi Iro no Samba” and the extra sweet “Pink no Parachute” as the venue was bathed in pink lights.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P032 img_PASSPO_20150101_P033 img_PASSPO_20150101_P037 img_PASSPO_20150101_P038

Returning to full-length versions of songs, the first part of the concert ended with fan favorites “Love Diary”, “Sakura Komachi”, “Cosmic You”, and “Natsuzora Hanabi”.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P023 img_PASSPO_20150101_P025 img_PASSPO_20150101_P026 img_PASSPO_20150101_P027 img_PASSPO_20150101_P034 img_PASSPO_20150101_P035 img_PASSPO_20150101_P028 img_PASSPO_20150101_P039 img_PASSPO_20150101_P041 img_PASSPO_20150101_P045

The members then moved to the back of the stage for the “Band PASSPO☆” section of the show, taking up their instruments and began a 6-song performance which included “Perfect Sky”, “BREAK OUT!!”, “2DAYS”, “Candy ・Room”, “Shiny Road”, and GPP”. This was the first time for them to perform “BREAK OUT!!” and “2DAYS” live as a band but their practice paid off as they sounded a lot better than they had last spring (when “Perfect Sky” went on sale and they performed it at several release events).

img_PASSPO_20150101_P051 img_PASSPO_20150101_P046 img_PASSPO_20150101_P048 img_PASSPO_20150101_P049 img_PASSPO_20150101_P052 img_PASSPO_20150101_P053 img_PASSPO_20150101_P056 img_PASSPO_20150101_P057

A video showing a rehearsal of The Ground Crew played on the screen as the stage was rearranged according to the specifications of their all-star backing band lead by producer Penne to Arabiatta (guitar/keyboards) with ex-Sex Machineguns members Panther (guitar) and HIMAWARI (drums), Gargoyle’s KENTARO (guitar), and $pyke (bass). A second introduction video played as The Ground Crew launched into a live version of “Ignition” and PASSPO☆ returned in their TRACKS outfits adorned with angel wings for “Baby Jump ~ Tengoku he no Toujou-bin~”.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P058 img_PASSPO_20150101_P059 img_PASSPO_20150101_P060 img_PASSPO_20150101_P061

The angel wings were thrown down and the temperature in Tokyo Dome City Hall began to rise with “Uhae!” and “WANTED!!”, which was ended by Makoto Okunaka sounding a gong. Sako Makita and Anna Tamai continued with their graceful dance solos during “Rock Da Week”. Heels were kicked up and fists pumped during the fast punk of “Pock☆Star”. Mio Masui and Okunaka got the audience even more riled up as Penne to Arabiatta showed off his tremolo bar skills during the intro for “Dom Dom Freedom”. Hawaiian 6 guitarist Yuta Yasuno made a guest appearance for “Mousou no Hawaii” and “Mudai”, which he wrote for PASSPO☆ in 2013. Tamai seemed to be overcome with emotion during the middle of “Mudai” but pulled it together to finish the song. Yasuno tossed his guitar into the audience before walking off stage.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P062 img_PASSPO_20150101_P065 img_PASSPO_20150101_P067 img_PASSPO_20150101_P068 img_PASSPO_20150101_P070 img_PASSPO_20150101_P069 img_PASSPO_20150101_P071

The Strings Airport Quartet provided an ominous intro for “BEAST IN YOU” and orchestral flourishes to “Wish on a star” and “Bathtub”, which also featured soap bubbles floating around the stage.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P074 img_PASSPO_20150101_P075 img_PASSPO_20150101_P078 img_PASSPO_20150101_P080 img_PASSPO_20150101_P082 img_PASSPO_20150101_P083

Continuing on with “Next Flight”, “MASK”, and “WING”, Mio Masui seemed to be getting emotional as well, mentioning things that made her shed tears in 2014 before starting off “Onegai” as light blue penlights lit up the audience. Masui then took up the bass that she inherited from Akihiro Yokoyama (longtime bassist of The Ground Crew and thrash metal band UNITED that passed away unexpectedly in 2014), tears rolling down her cheeks as she started off “Himawari”.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P085 img_PASSPO_20150101_P086 img_PASSPO_20150101_P087 img_PASSPO_20150101_P088

The crowd ran back and forth on the floor and followed the movements of PASSPO☆ during “Step and Go”, rocked back and forth to “Material Girl”, and jumped tirelessly to 「I」. After “Kucha Love”, it was time for Makoto Okunaka to say her goodbyes to the 8 members of PASSPO☆ who had been with her for the past 5 years. At the risk of being disrespectful, this moment should have been better organized. Okunaka wandered back and forth on the stage, pulling aside each member one-by-one, sometimes forgetting what she had planned to say to them. The main part of the concert came to a close with Okunaka’s farewell song “TRACKS”.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P090 img_PASSPO_20150101_P091 img_PASSPO_20150101_P092 img_PASSPO_20150101_P093 img_PASSPO_20150101_P094 img_PASSPO_20150101_P095 img_PASSPO_20150101_P096 img_PASSPO_20150101_P097 img_PASSPO_20150101_P098 img_PASSPO_20150101_P099 img_PASSPO_20150101_P100 img_PASSPO_20150101_P101 img_PASSPO_20150101_P102 img_PASSPO_20150101_P103 img_PASSPO_20150101_P104

Even after almost 6 hours, the audience showed no signs of fatigue, chanting “Makoto!” for several minutes and stringing blue lights from the front of the stage to the back of the floor, making a sort of makeshift runway. The encore began as PASSPO☆ returned to the stage in their usual tutu skirts, this time coordinated with pink Makoto Okunaka graduation T-shirts. Despite Okunaka having a tiara balanced on her head, it remained there during the wild towel waving of “LALA Love Train”. A spring Kanto solo tour titled “PASSPO☆ One-Man Flight Tour 2015~More Attention~” was announced and Okunaka reminded fans to watch her in the upcoming horror film “Shinrei Shashinbu”. Shiori Mori reminded Okunaka that “no matter where you go, we’ll be here for you” before singing “Dear My Friends”. Okunaka’s eyes welled up and her voice was hoarse and shaky as she sang her solo line in “Growing up”, a song she described as her “decisive song”. The encore came to a close with “Let It Go!!”, PASSPO☆’s very first single, as specifically requested by Okunaka.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P105 img_PASSPO_20150101_P107

The stage went dark once more and the “Makoto!” chants continued until PASSPO☆ returned for a second encore, this time in the shredded denim tops from “Shojo Hikou”. The Ground Crew and Strings Airport Quartet also returned for the grand finale. Leader Ai Negishi, perhaps hit by the finality of the moment, became emotional, musing about what the appeal of PASSPO☆ is and what it would have been like if “better” members had been chosen but also feeling grateful that it was the 9 members standing next to her on stage. Ending with the song that began the night almost 7 hours earlier, the audience loudly sang several verses of “Shojo Hikou” as gold confetti fluttered down from the ceiling.

img_PASSPO_20150101_P109 img_PASSPO_20150101_P110 img_PASSPO_20150101_P111 img_PASSPO_20150101_P112 img_PASSPO_20150101_P113 img_PASSPO_20150101_P114 img_PASSPO_20150101_P115 img_PASSPO_20150101_P116 img_PASSPO_20150101_P117 img_PASSPO_20150101_P118 img_PASSPO_20150101_P119 img_PASSPO_20150101_P120

While people all over Japan were braving long lines and cold weather for their first shrine visit of the year, PASSPO☆ provided a warm welcome for the Year of the Sheep. It was truly a rare event that tested the mind, body, and spirit of the “passengers” on PASSPO☆’s first flight of 2015. Makoto Okunaka may no longer be part of PASSPO☆ but you can experience this amazing concert over and over again when the 2-disc DVD is released on March 25th.

Furisode and Coming of Age Day in Japan

It is common in Japan around New Year’s to see women dressed in furisode, kimonos with sleeves that almost reach the floor. Whether or not they are celebrating their Coming of Age Day that year, it is an image closely tied to winter just as yukata are to summer. Compared to a yukata which is generally made of cotton and can even be bought at Uniqlo or Amazon for less than ¥10,000, furisode are made of silk and can cost as much as a new car!

Coming of Age Day in Japan is celebrated on the second Monday of January and is a national holiday celebrating when a young person turns 20, the age that they are considered an adult. On this day, young people traditionally go to a local shrine and receive prayers for good fortune. Generally, everyone who attends a Coming of Age Ceremony has already turned 20 before that day but there are those who go when their birthday is only a few months after the holiday.

Although the furisode used to be a unisex garment, it has become synonymous with young unmarried women during the New Year. Due to the high costs associated with owning a furisode, many opt to rent one and make an appointment at a beauty salon in order to have their hair done and receive help in getting dressed in preparation for Coming of Age Day. Although the style of kimono is somewhat different than furisode worn during the New Year, if you have seen AKB48‘s MV for “Sakura no Shiori”, you can see how much preparation goes into wearing such a kimono during the colder months in Japan.

Without any further ado, take a look at some of the pictures of idols in furisode that we found on social media. Is there any kind of special New Year’s clothing that you wear where you are from? Is there any special event for when young people become adults? Let us know!

Nogizaka 46‘s Ami Noujo, Kana Takada, Nanase Nishino, Reika Sakurai, Sayuri Inoue, Seira Nagashima, and Yumi Wakatsuki had their Coming of Age Ceremony at Nogi Shrine in Nogizaka on January 10th. The arrows in their hands are a common item sold at shrines during the New Year as they are believed to be able to defeat evil spirits. Pictures are from the Nogizaka 46 blog.

“Apu-Ome!” Ayano Sato turned 20 this year and it seems that she wants to try skydiving. Considering that UPUPGIRLS (KARI) already climbed Mt. Rena (Vanilla Beans) comparing the members of TOKYO GIRLS' STYLE to the characters of Sailor Moon.

It was a cold and rainy night in Tokyo on January 21st but, the discussion was red-hot at the book release event for choreographer Natsumi Takenaka‘s new book “Idol = Heroine” at Tokyo Culture Culture!

Takenaka was joined by a panel of Naomi Anzai (PASSPO☆), Hitomi Sakai (Idoling!!!), Nanami Nishi (Niji no Conquistador), Rena (Vanilla Beans), and members of NadeKS JAPAN (a parody name combining “Nadeshiko JAPAN”, the national women’s soccer team and “KS” from “KSDD”, an initialization of the term “kuso daredemo daisuki”, a derogative term meaning someone who likes just about every idol there is) members: Nayumi Ninomiya, Momoko Oguchi, Reina Hikasa, and Rachael Watashiga.

Takenaka explaining the different traits of the characters of Sailor Moon.

Takenaka explaining the different traits of the characters of Sailor Moon.

Through her years of experience working with idols and her love of Sailor Moon, Takenaka began to see similarities between the two, which she believes contributes to their popularity. According to Takenaka:

Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino – sort of like the center that didn’t really want to be an idol at first and can be a bit of a crybaby.
Luna – there to make sure that Sailor Moon does what she has to do.
Sailor Mercury/Ami Mizuno – seen as the spiritual ancestor of Evangelion’s Rei Ayanami, is characterized by her short hair, intelligence, gentleness, and quiet personality. She is the one that is the most popular with male fans.
Sailor Mars/Rei Hino – the strong and disciplined one that is always saving and covering for Sailor Moon.
Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino – characterized by lightning, tall and strong yet feminine, popular with female fans, and will unexpectedly do cute things (“gap moe”).
Sailor Venus/Minako Aino – active as “Sailor V” early in the series, represents the member who was always trying to become an idol, really cute.
Chibiusa (Sailor Moon’s daughter) – generally the youngest and most childish member of the group and spoiled by the others.

Takenaka explaining which Sailor Moon characters she thinks are most like the members of UPUPGIRLS (KARI) using a chart from her book. Reina Hikasa's choices are in the middle row. Seiko Omori's choices are in the bottom row.

Takenaka explaining which Sailor Moon characters she thinks are most like the members of UPUPGIRLS (KARI) using a chart from her book. Reina Hikasa’s choices are in the middle row. Seiko Omori’s choices are in the bottom row.

Based on these criteria, Takenaka showed how she, Reina Hikasa, and Seiko Omori compared the members of UPUPGIRLS (KARI) to Sailor Moon characters in the book. According to Takenaka:

Minami Sengoku – Sailor Moon – shortest, is made fun of often, brings stability to the group
Saki Mori – Sailor Mercury – kind older sister aura
Ayano Sato – Sailor Mars – always saving and supporting Sengoku
Akari Saho – Sailor Jupiter – tall, karate skills, dances like a lightning storm.
Azusa Sekine – Sailor Venus – dancing and singing skills, most idol-like member
Manami Arai – Chibiusa – youngest
Konatsu Furukawa – Luna – oldest member of the group, makes sure Sengoku stays focused
*Referenece : UPUPGIRLS(KARI) profile page  http://www.upupgirlskakkokari.com/contents/profile/

Takenaka added that Saho and Mori switch places if they are not in Sailor Senshi/Scout mode. Hikasa’s casting was almost the same as Takenaka’s except that she placed Furukawa as Sailor Mars and Sato as Luna. Omori made Akari Saho all of the Sailor Senshi/Scouts!

Hitomi Sakai (Idoling!!!) talking about Rurika Yokoyama, who she thinks is similar to Sailor Venus, Eri Ayase (Love Live!), and Matsuzaka Sensei (Crayon Shinchan).

Hitomi Sakai (Idoling!!!) talking about Rurika Yokoyama, who she thinks is similar to Sailor Venus, Eri Ayase (Love Live!), and Matsuzaka Sensei (Crayon Shinchan).

Hitomi Sakai (Idoling!!!) was up next and she practically delivered a classroom lecture where she cast the members of her group as characters from Sailor Moon, Love Live, Crayon Shinchan, and Chibi Maruko-chan! Despite Sakai’s extensive analysis of the other members, it seemed that when it came to herself, she just picked which ever character she liked the best. If you are an Idoling!!! fan, do you agree with Sakai’s selections? If you don’t really know much about Idoling!!!, have you become more interested in them?

Sailor Moon
Yui Kawamura – Sailor Mercury – smart, kind, not that cute, popular with males, respected by females
Rurika Yokoyama – Sailor Venus – has looks and personality, aura of a center, looks like Venus, cosplayed as her before, tall
Mikaela Wako Sato – Sailor Jupiter – reliable, powerful, took karate
>Mayu Furuhashi – Sailor Mars – straightforward (sunao), Sakai wanted it to be her since Mars is her favorite
Serina Nagano – Chibiusa – child-like in behavior and appearance, negative, makes others want to protect her
Nao Asahi – Sailor Uranus – boyish
Erika Tonooka – Sailor Neptune – elegant yet childish, similar to the image of Neptune
Mayu Sekiya – Artemis – tries her best but often fails spectacularly
Hitomi Sakai – Sailor Saturn – Sakai chose Saturn simply because she likes Saturn and wanted to be her.

Love Live!
Nao Asahi – Honoka Kosaka
Rurika Yokoyama – Eri Ayase
Kaede Hashimoto – Kotori Minami
Erika Tonooka – Umi Sonoda
Mayu Furuhashi – Rin Hoshizora
Karen Ishida – Maki Nishikino
Hitomi Sakai – Nozomi Tojo
Yurika Tachibana – Hanayo Koizumi
Serina Nagano – Niko Yazawa

After a short break, Rena (Vanilla Beans) talked about which Sailor Moon characters were most like members of TOKYO GIRLS’ STYLE.

Ayano Konishi – Sailor Mars – looks powerful, good at singing yet laid-back
Hitomi Arai – Sailor Moon – youngest, center, expressive, child-like, seems like she would say something like “I will love Hello Kitty forever!”
Miyu Yamabe – Sailor Mercury – jewel-like, has long arms and legs
Yuri Nakae – Sailor Jupiter – extremely mature for her age, often hangs out with Rena
Mei Shoji – Sailor Venus

Despite initially not having any interest in idols, Nanami Nishi admitted to wanting to become one when she saw PASSPO☆ performing and Anna Tamai asked the audience “would anyone else like to stand on stage and see this amazing view (of all the fans)?” A first-timer to such a talk event, Nishi was impressive in comparing the members of her group to characters from Pretty Cure. As Niji no Conquistador is such a new group, having only started performing last summer, perhaps those of you familiar with Pretty Cure will find yourselves a member worth supporting?

Minari Nagata – Nozomi Yumehara (Cure Dream)
Yuka Shigematsu – Rikka Hishikawa (Cure Diamond)
Nonoka Okumura – Erika Kurumi (Cure Marine)
Nana Yoshimura – Yayoi Kise (Cure Peace)
Nanami Nishi – Nagisa Misumi (Cure Black)

Naomi Anzai might not be that knowledgeable about Sailor Moon but, did her best to compare the members of PASSPO☆ to characters from the anime Ojamajo Doremi, disappointing Hitomi Sakai who apparently saw them as being closer to characters from Dragon Ball. It’s kind of sad that Yukimi Fujimoto didn’t even get compared to a character with a name though!

Natsumi Iwamura – Doremi
Shiori Mori – Aiko
Sako Makita – Hazuki
Ai Negishi – Onpu
Naomi Anzai – Momoka
Mio Masui – Poppu
Anna Tamai – Witch Queen
Yukimi Fujimoto – “Doremi’s classmate”

Although things ran long while Naomi Anzai, Hitomi Sakai, Nanami Nishi, and Rena were comparing idols to anime characters and there was very little time for the members of NadeKS to talk as scheduled, it was a fun and educational event. As we mentioned in the article announcing the sale of Natsumi Takenaka’s book, if you are studying Japanese and like idols and/or anime, Idol=Heroine should definitely be a more interesting alternative to Tale of Genji or some other old piece of literature if you want to improve your skills.

On February 2 (known in Japan as “twin tail day”) Twin Tail Association Japan held “Nihon Twin Tail Award 2015″ at shibuya duo MUSIC EXCHANGE to celebrate those who contributed to the furthering of “twin tail culture” in the past year.

Mio Masui from PASSPO☆ won in the idol category. Shiina Pikarin and Yukako Kurosaka from Silent Siren won for the artist category. Kurosaka was not in Japan at the time of the event and accepted the award via video message. Yura won for the model category. Former Popteen model and Gyaru tarento Kumiko Funayama won for the tarento category. Receiving a special award was Yume Mizusawa, author of the light novel “Ore, Twin tail ni Narimasu” (Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!).

There was also a music fest at TSUTAYA O-EAST and TSUTAYA O-WEST that began at 2:02pm, including performances by over 30 different groups, all wearing their hair up in twin tails. Despite it being a regular work day for most, the turnout was overwhelming and it was difficult to move from stage to stage. Just as Twin Tail Festival on November 11, 2014, all females with their hair in twin tails were granted free admission to the event.

After the awards ceremony finished, Girls’ dance and vocal group Chu-Z took the stage at shibuya duo MUSIC EXCHANGE to kick off the performances. Bringing their “BomberSticks” to a Twin Tail Association Japan event for the second time, they showed off their expanded range with the songs from their upcoming double A-side single “Hana no Arch/Brand Boy” before heading to Roppongi to appear on TV Tokyo’s “Melodix Premium”.

img_TTA_live_20150202_02 img_TTA_live_20150202_01 img_TTA_live_20150202_03 img_TTA_live_20150202_04 img_TTA_live_20150202_05 img_TTA_live_20150202_06 img_TTA_live_20150202_07 img_TTA_live_20150202_08 img_TTA_live_20150202_09 img_TTA_live_20150202_10

Fellow repeat performer at a Twin Tail Association Japan event, palet showed off yet another side to their ever-expanding potential with “Run to the New Wind”, the lead track off their upcoming album “LOVE n’ ROLL!!”, which was produced by the legendary Tetsuya Komuro and Hiromasa Ijichi.

Doll☆Elements made it a hat trick for Arc Jewel, joining Lovely★Doll and Luce Twinkle Wink☆ at the event. With their crowns and outfits decorated with hearts, the audience was taken through the looking glass into a wonderland of dolls that came to life, dancing as lightly as falling cherry blossoms.

As expected of a Twin Tail Association Japan event, their representative group, drop, closed out the night at shibuya duo MUSIC EXCHANGE to a jam-packed house of twin tail enthusiasts.

img_TTA_live_20150202_16 img_TTA_live_20150202_11 img_TTA_live_20150202_12 img_TTA_live_20150202_13 img_TTA_live_20150202_14 img_TTA_live_20150202_15 img_TTA_live_20150202_20 img_TTA_live_20150202_17 img_TTA_live_20150202_19

As there were three venues for Twin Tail Association Japan’s second big event, it bordered on being something like a smaller-scale @JAM EXPO or Tokyo Idol Festival. Highlights from O-WEST and O-EAST included:
- 3min.‘s precise choreography and powerful singing
- The energetic performance of Akamaru Dash☆
- FES☆TIVE with their wild Japanese festival-style
- Aki Shibu project‘s return to O-WEST after their sold out show the previous week
- Houkago Princess singing along with their fans when the music cut out mid-song
- PASSPO☆ and UPUPGIRLS (KARI) veering closer to the cute side of their catalogs compared to the aggressive set list from @JAM the field vol. 7 which was O-EAST the night before. Members Shiori Mori from PASSPO☆ and Manami Arai from UPUPGIRLS (KARI) did their best to make twin tails despite their short hair.
- Yurumerumo! jumping into the photographer’s pit in front of the stage to high-five their fans throughout the performance and Ano being lifted by fans during their last song “Natsu on Blue”.

Twin Tail Association Japan definitely went big with their first big event of 2015 so make sure you don’t miss the next one!
